Seeking Solutions to the Mysteries of the Shroud
The city of Richland, together with the neighboring cities of Kennewick and Pasco, are located on the Columbia River in the south-eastern part of the state of Washington and make up what is called the Tri-Cities area of Washington. The current population of about 260,000 makes Tri-Cities the fourth-largest metropolitan area in Washington. It is also one of the fastest growing areas in the country. General information on the city of Richland and what there is to do in Richland is given at the following internet sites:
Tri-Cities was chosen for this conference because Richland is one of the premier research centers in the country. Richland has of one of the highest ratios of PhDs per capita of anywhere in the country due to the many research laboratories in and around Richland. Bordering Richland on the north side is the Hanford Nuclear Reservation covering 586 square miles, where the plutonium was made for the nuclear weapons used in World War 2. And the Light Interferometer Gravity-Wave Observatory (LIGO), where gravity waves were first discovered, is located on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation just north of Richland. Further information on the LIGO facility and the detection of gravity waves can be found at the internet sites listed below. One of the main purposes for choosing Richland for the site of the conference is to help efforts to recruit research personnel from the surrounding area to assist in research on the Shroud.
